2024 Bobbin Lace journey

February 24, 2025

Hello lovelies,

a huge chunk of work last year (2024) was definitely from my bobbin lace journey. But adding it to my costume's list doesn't feel right, so I decided to show off my work in my own post.

This year I made a few pieces but also drew my own Torchon lace. It's one hell to draw and I definitely prefer it being drawn on the computer. It's so much easier to erase, and I can mistakes all I want lol.

Here is the first version of the drawing - all in black and hand drawn.

And here is the drawn version for it. I made so many mistakes and as we were drawing with pens, my teacher had to literally scratch of the colour with a paper cutter.

At the street lace making event in Göllersdorf, I started doing this orange cat. It's my first time doing something other than a straight lace and I can't say I like it too much. At one point, there are just pins in the way all the time.

Had to include this picture because I was super cute.

And here I am going down again and look at all those stupid pins.

Tadah, and here is the finished cat. Not my best work, because I also hated the thread as it was real silk and I could pull it apart at times when it was thin.

Last year I also learned another essential bobbin lace skill - the gimp. And I had to do this bookmark kind of look with it in orange? I know, weird colour and not my choice lol.

Sheila is mad when I do bobbin lace. This could be her time for petting her.

Here is a close-up of the lace and the original lace on the right side.

Another technique I learned was the "Pagodengrund" or the "triangular ground". It's not my favourite lol. But people made a big fuss about it so I always thought it was so difficult. It's not, it truly isn't.

And here I ended it after two triangular grounds and started with Tønder lace from Denmark. I found a class at the lace museum, USA but my teacher said to just buy the book and do the lace like that as I should manage it alone. Ok, I guess? I did ef up a few things but also, she was right. It was ok and I did manage alone.

My teacher gave me her prickings and a small lace band she did when she made the lace. It doesn't only look tiny, it is really tiny.

I made the lace over the span of one afternoon and look how much progress I had - almost none. But the worst part of it was that I used the tiniest pins I had but they were still a bit too big and I couldn't see a thing. I didn't even know if what I did was correct? So, after I made the first "eye", I removed the pins.

Tadaahhh, looks much better without it, doesn't it?

While th Tønder lace was my private project, here is another one I made in class. It's with clovers and as the last project of the year and new years eve coming soon, i thought it was a pretty neat idea.

The ground was torchon and not hard at all. The tricky part was the clover and figuring out where I had to add the green thread and where to leave it out again.

The thing is, that the cloves are round and the green thread encompassed the outer line, but at the same time, couldn't go "up" in the lace. Meaning, that if I already made the lace, couldn't add it anymore between the layers. That was a bit annoying because I had to think and I hate to think while crafting. lol.

But, the project was almost done at this point. I could have continued it but I decided not to. I really didn't want to see clovers anymore and I finished this project in January, way too late for new years eve. Damn.

The lace is definitely not my prettiest work but I was cursing so much at it, I was just happy that I completed it.

3 pieces done in a year and one only half finished. I think I could have done better (but also way worse). With costume sewing and doing embroidery for Royal Duck, I think it's pretty neat that I did finished some.

Forecast for 2025

Livestreams and bucks point lace! I am currently attending a bucks point lace class from the Lace Museum in California and really enjoy it. I am thinking about attending part 2 in April and May afterwards. As for youtube, I am livestreaming weekly/bi-weekly now on my account: Auris Lothol.

I do not have a schedule and rather stream when I don't have any other appointment that day. But I would love for you to attend or watch it on youtube.

Apart from that, I plan on creating my own pattern and selling them - as an instruction pattern but also als a finished one. I hope the people will like it!

all the best,

Auris Lothol
